Happily Ever After

My sister Mandi's bridal shower was a huge success! I think everyone had a lovely time, especially the bride. :) This is a picture heavy post and I hope you enjoy! We did a "Happily Ever After" theme in Cinderella colors of pale blue, white, silver and black. My mother made the gorgeous wreath above.



I made Mandi a banner that we hung over the main table.



We decorated with white pumpkins and black leaves on cake stands and lots of silver serving dishes.



We even used "fancy" paper goods including plastic cutlery that looks like real silver flat ware! All that white milk glass was a really lucky thrift store find on Friday morning. Oh and check out the cute rings tied to the napkins . . .



My cousin Lisa made this gorgeous cake:



It's based on this cake from Martha Stewart Weddings. Isn't it amazing?

The favors were Italian inspired:



The boxes are called Italian favor boxes and inside are the traditional five Jordan almonds. In traditional Italian weddings, five almonds signify five wishes for the bride and groom: health, wealth, happiness, fertility, and longevity.

Speaking of tradition, in 1970 my great-grandmother Mary Fiore made a shower umbrella to use for my Aunt Pam's bridal shower. That umbrella has now been used for every family and close friends shower ever since.

We decorated Mandi's umbrella with blue bows, blue tissue flowers and a glass star to wish upon. :) You can see a better picture here. Blogger wouldn't let me upload this one for some reason.

We also left this little guy on Mandi's chair:

He was one of my favorite decorative elements!

And just to show you that craftiness runs in the family, this chest was made by my Dad:

Isn't it wonderful? Instead of the traditional bridal shower wishing well we decided to have a "Princess Dowry" and ask each guest to bring a little something for Mandi's treasure chest.

Thrifty Kismet

I mentioned earlier in the week that I had some thrifty good luck this past weekend. Remember my china? Well on Saturday I headed back to Savers as I had to hit the grocery store and they are (sort of) near by. I was very glad I did because look what was waiting for me:



That would be 12 dessert plates, 11 soup bowls and the creamer and sugar in the Mikasa Atlanta pattern I bought two weeks ago! I am on my way to a complete set. At this point I'm one soup bowl, 8 fingertip bowls and 4 cups and saucers short of a service for 12. I have spent around $45 total. I love that the sugar bowl is large and the creamer decorative.

Also, back in June I mentioned my search for Culver LTD bar ware and low and behold . . .



See it there on the left? An ice bucket and three rocks glasses. I would love to find one more glass to have a set of 4. I do have a large glass in this same pattern as well. Also netted on Saturday - United States puzzle still sealed (I had one as a child) for 99 cents, a holiday oven mitt with tags for $2 and a box of zippers for 99 cents. The paper mache wise man ornament and red berry candle ring were in a bag of junk I bought for $2. I picked it up because it had a wicker cornucopia in it and was pleasantly surprised to find these two goodies in there as well.

I'm off to Charm City tonight to start the preparations for my sister's bridal shower on Saturday. We have loads to do but I think I can convince my thrifty mom to make a thrifty stop at some point. Wish me luck!

Aware

Elena Fiore Boatwright, Helen* to her friends and family, battled breast cancer. So did her older sister Gloria. They lived at a time where women didn't get regular mammograms or know about self checks. We are more fortunate than that.

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness month. Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in the United States. Click here for free information on breast cancer and help spread the awareness.

In sewing news . . . . yes, you heard that right. Sewing! Me! I promised myself I would get on the wagon in September and work on my sewing. So many of you amaze me everyday with your wonderful projects that I was inspired to try.

I started small with these sleep masks:



Now don't look too closely or you'll see how uneven my stitching is but it's a start!

I already adore it. There are lots of fun projects for novices like me and some larger things to work up to. My next project to try will be those bags on the bottom right there. I happen to have some round bamboo handles already. Wish me luck!

Spooktacular

I have some fun Halloweeny goodies in The Goodness Shop!



Crocheted Candy Corn Treat Bags. I just love these! I was able to make most of them on the subway since it's a pattern I can remember. I think they came out so cute. And see my cool pumpkin? He's the old school plastic kind like I had as a kid. I found him at Savers on Saturday. :)



Black Pumpkin Paper Rosettes. I love making rosettes. I can make them in front of the TV so they have a special place in my heart. Made from sheet music, crepe paper and card stock.

I also added a few other non-Halloween items like this basket pincushion:



Cute flower topped pin made by Robin at Robin Bird's Nest.

And a few tea cup pot holders:



Sweet flower appliques were a swap gift from Dana!

It was nice to feel productive! I am hoping to keep the shop updated more often now and maybe actually sell a few things LOL. I've enjoyed trying to come up with new things to make and I have a serious ache in my arm from patting myself on the back over those treat bags. I don't know why, they just thrill me. :)

You Rock!

As I mentioned I was so lucky to be nominated as a Rockin' Girl Blogger by Hunny Bunny! Now it's my turn to return some of the love.




1 - Sweet Repeats - girl, what would I do without you? We've been bloggy buddies from the very beginning and it's so nice to have made such a wonderful friend.

Now some thrifty finds from a trip out on Long Island with my good friend Joolz. (who's blog is sadly out of a date so I won't even link to it, JULIE.) Ahem.



The lemon lime pitcher is Pyrex. I've never seen this before, is anyone familiar with it? Are there other pieces? It's way cute. Another vintage frame, some yummy crochet cotton and a few more of the little lotus bowls I seem to all of a sudden collect. The "Wee Me" baby book looks vintage but is in really good shape so I think it's a reproduction. I adore the Asian inspired linens and aren't those tiny salt and pepper shakers the cutest?



On the day we thrifted the Christmas stuff was half price so after explaining to the lady that yes, just because the tree skirt doesn't SAY Christmas that it is indeed a CHRISTMAS TREE skirt she rang it up at $2.00. Of course then she had to call over the manager to ask about the cake plate which does say Christmas right on the box. I would have paid $5 for it but did get it for a rockin' $2.50. It's so cute and colorful.

I'm not sure if I'll get any thrifting in this weekend as Luis and I are on a mission to buy an entertainment center. Wish me luck as he and I have much different ideas of what passes as "nice" furniture

Sweet & Sinister Swap

I joined the Sweet & Sinister Swap hosted by Artsy Mama and I am so glad I did! I had a fabulous partner and absolutely NO swap angst what so ever. This was such a fun swap to put together and that's mainly because Sid, my fabulous partner, is so kind and warm and open that it was a joy to create for her.

As Sid has received her package from me I thought I would share what I sent.



Look! I sewed something. The doll on the right is Betty Boo and I made her AND her clothes all by myself. She is a sweet Halloween poppet and I think she came out pretty good even though her head is a little flat. ;) The bag on the left is knit with Patons Brilliant and filled with goodies.



Inside the Black Magic Bag are two mini "Books of Wisdom" - Arthurian Wisdom and Celtic Wisdom both of which are things Sid mentioned she likes. Also included are some fun Halloween themed cocktail umbrellas and a package of vintage Halloween cupcake picks.



I found these great flocked masks at the dollar store! I added a little glitter, some ribbon and some feathers and leaves.



There are so many great Halloween decorations out there that it was tough to choose! I included a fun Jersey Devil post card, a black hobnail "cauldron" candle holder with a vanilla cupcake scented Yankee candle, paper broom ornament, glittery "beware" sign and a fun marabou bat wearing a glittered mask.



And finally a fun paper rosette pin for Sid to wear on Halloween when she is teaching. This came out very well, I think I'll make a few more for the shop perhaps?



This was a great swap and I just can't wait for Sid's package to arrive. It's winging it's way to me as we speak! You can check out the other swap goodies at this Flickr group site.

Fabulous Fun & Fantastic Finds

I'm back! We had a wonderful weekend get away to Mystic, CT and I have much to share. One of the big highlights of the trip was getting to meet Susan at T Party!



She is just as wonderful as I knew she would be and our tea was delicious! We had the fall tea and I just fell in love with Vintage Rose. Yum. T Party is lovely and charming.

Another highlight of thispast weekend was of course the Elephant's Trunk Flea Market. Since we first read about this flea in Country Living I was worried that it might be a lot of pricey antiques but I was very happy with the offerings and my finds. So in true Country Living fashion, here is my run down:

Okay, I'm over my swap angst. I pulled out all the items I had gathered together for LeeAnn and inspiration struck and I added a few things and all of a sudden it came together. :) I love that. So I sent her swap off today and will send on any extra goodies I find this weekend separately. :)

So what did LeeAnn send me? I told you it would be fabulous and it is all that and more!



Are you drooling or what? This is a large zipper pouch LeeAnn made from an old table runner. She is so good at taking thrifted items and making them new! I really love this bag, it is already in my suitcase packed with the essentials for my weekend trip.

And inside the bag?



You can see that LeeAnn stuck to the brown and tan theme that I forgot! While the bag is definitely my favorite part, a very close second is this adorable button bracelet in a little linen bag!



It's perfect! And how cute is that button embroidery?



Great wooden spools including one with some vintage brown ribbon, an owl cookie cutter, a really cute flower magnet, some fun kitty fabric and a set of coasters.



And I really love these old number flash cards. This is definitely something I would have picked up at the thrift store. They should fun in collages and tag making.

So thank you LeeAnn, you really went all out and I appreciate it. :) Your swap should arrive soon, I hope you like it HALF as much as I like yours.

Now about this weekend . . . my mom and my aunt are coming to New York tonight to start our adventure. Tomorrow morning our first stop is T-Party! I seriously cannot wait to meet Susan and eat some of the ridiculous goodies she has! Yum. Then we're off to Mystic for two days of shopping and sight seeing. And then Sunday we're going to the Elephants Trunk Flea Market! I am so excited and hope to be back next week with loads of goodies to show you. We'll be ending up our weekend at the Giants game Sunday night. That was my husbands contribution LOL.

So have a fabulous weekend, friends, I'll be thinking of you as I weed through antiques and junk this weekend. Don't worry, I'm bring you something. :)

OCD

I obsess over things. One stupid thing I do is I never look at the clock when I wake up at night. I don't want to know how long I have until I have to get up. If I did, I would obsess over it. So I just squint my eyes and go to the bathroom and try not to bump into anything.

I also obsess over purchases. And not just major purchases. I tend to worry that I shouldn't have bought something because I'll never use it regardless of price. I was doing this last week over this:



That would be 12 dinner plates, 4 finger tip bowls, 8 cups and saucers and 4 dessert plates. They are all the Mikasa "Atlanta" pattern except for the dessert plates. They are Mikasa "Sweet Briar" and go with the others surprisingly well. I like Mikasa china. I usually just buy it when I see it which fortunately for my pocket book isn't often. I love these two tea cups I found:



There is just something sweet about their patterns.

I also have a full service for twelve set of Mikasa china in the "Adrienne" pattern. It was my grandmother's. Her mother bought it for her when she, my great-grandmother Mary, worked as a seamstress at The May Company. So I don't NEED another set of china. And I've been feeling bad about buying it. Oh the cost you ask? $30. Well Sunday I was cleaning up and the china was stacked there waiting to be washed and I promised myself that I would use it! And I will! So I got out a plate stand and stacked it on there and put it right on the counter for easy access. :) So you see? I obsess.

I also obsess over swaps. GULP. Yeah. I'm doing a personal swap with LeeAnn that we organized back in July. At that time I said we should do a blue and tan color swap. Well I managed to forget that when I started putting together the swap! But LeeAnn is cool and said she didn't mind that I went with a white, blue, pink, yellow, red, orange and green swap. ;) Oh and her swap to me arrived TODAY. I haven't opened it yet. I'm trying to resist the urge at least until tonight. I know it will be wonderful, she is so talented and she sews and everything. I don't sew very well regardless of the proffessional seamstress great-grandmother and the grandmother who made all her clothes. I hope she'll like the few things I did make. :) Where is my swap to her? On my craft desk. Half done. Yeah, I thought we had an October 1st send out date. But again, LeeAnn is fabulous and said I could send it next week. Which I promise to make worth her while as I'm taking a pretty fabulous trip this weekend where I hope to snag her a treasure! More about that tomorrow. So swap angst. I have it bad.

What else do I obsess over? Making a lot of the same thing when I realize it's easy, fast and satisfying. Um, remember the crocheted cupcakes and ducks? Yeah. Out of control. So what did I make AGAIN recently? Another heart.



The ribbon isn't wide enough but I still like it. I honestly had big plans to give these as gifts but I'm hoarding them all to myself. I have three now.



And obviously three is just not enough. ;)

Tomorrow I'll tell you about that upcoming trip and probably obsess a bit more over my swap with LeeAnn. But that's just what I do and I'm okay with that. Sort of. :)

Getting to Know Me

Hello! I know I've been absent, it's a bit of a tough week at work for me, but I knew I had to pop over at lunch today and post my Sweet Goodness Swaps Holiday Sister Swap 20 Questions post. :)

My "sister" is Breanna and I'm so excited to get to know her better. :) You can read her 20 Answers here.

1. Favorite Color: Red! (just like my sister Breanna!) I love decorating with red accents. They really pop against my butter yellow walls. I also have red hair AND I look great in red. Yes, I love red. Deep rich red. :)

2. Chocolate Lover? Milk, Dark, White, or none of the above? Dark chocolate! But I don't like it mixed with fruit. I like to keep my fruit and chocolate separate, please. :) I do love chocolate and nuts though, that is my favorite. Particulary hazelnuts. Yum.


3. What is your favorite craft hobby? It's hard to narrow it down but I love knitting and crocheting and paper crafts. I scrapbook and make cards, tags, etc.


4. What is a craft/art hobby that you would like to start? I wish I could sew better. I do okay but my patience is limited. I felt like this when I started knitting and now I consider myself pretty good at it so I'm hoping the sewing knowledge & skills will come in time. I certainly like fabric!


5. What craft do you NOT have an interest in or just not great in ( so your partner doesn’t send something you wouldn’t use)? I don't paint or make jewelry.

6. Do you have any allergies? (we don’t want to send anything with peanuts if it’ll make you blow up like a balloon!) No food allergies. I have the waistline to prove it LOL

7.What’s your favorite part of Halloween? Decorating, candy eating, costumes, or something else? I love Halloween. I love the black and orange combo, making costumes, spending a night being someone else . . . I love the imaginary aspect, witches, ghosts, etc.


8. Do you decorate for Thanksgiving/Fall? Yes, the fall holidays are my favorite. I love pumpkin scented candles and burn them the whole season. For Thanksgiving I put out a few things and I am in search of a new centerpiece this year.

9. December Holidays--what holiday do you celebrate? What type of decorations do you like to put up in your house for that holiday? We celebrate Christmas and I am a decorating fool! I have two Christmas trees and may get another small one for the kitchen this year.

10. Do you have any children, if so what are their ages, boys/girls? I have no children but once Luis and I pass our first anniversary in February we hope to grow our family. I am lucky to get to spend time with Luis' niece and nephew to get my "kid fix." :)

11. Do you have any pets, if so what kind? We have two dogs that I love. They are really part of our family. Mason is a 3 year old collie and Kaiser is a 2 year old Chinese Crested. For those of you familiar with the Crested breed, Kaiser is a powder puff hence he has hair. His mother is a hairless though. This is an old picture, Kaiser is quite large and in charge now. :)



12. Are you a reader? If so, what type of books do you like? I love to read! My husband doesn't get it when I say I'm going to go upstairs and read. LOL I like a lot of different kinds of books including thrillers, cheesy romances and children's books. :)

13. Are you celebrating a birthday or anniversary in October, November, or December? If so, what day and what is the occasion? no big days coming up for me

14. Do you collect anything? If so what type of things do you collect? I tend to collect junk! Too much in fact. I suppose I collect Christmas ornaments as I tend to buy them when I travel. I had plans to do a post on two recent collections I seem to have started and this is a great place to do it. I now have a collection of Oyster Plates:



I also recently found a plain white one as well. :) I also now seem to collect Japanese lotus bowls. I have found a few blue, some yellow and some white. As they are usually under a dollar at the thrift store it's a pretty low cost collection. :) I'll share my china collection in a later post. :)

15. What type of things do you like to cook? Are you an appetizer person, cookie maker, dessert freak or a take out type of person?? I am best at baking but I like to try new things. I don't like complicated recipes, I get bored. I also am the queen of the one dish wonder and like Breanna, love my crockpot. I make a lot of soups and stews when the weather turns cold.

16. What is your favorite scent? Is there one that you can’t stand? I love vanilla, pumpkin and gingerbread. Warm smells more so than florals. I really don't like patchouli, ick, and eucalyptus makes my nose itchy.

17. What’s your favorite song? This is tough, I like a lot of songs. How about a favorite genre? I like standards like Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Bobby Darin and Michael Buble. Oh and I LOVE Madonna. I can't help it.


18. What’s the last movie you went to see at the movie theater? The Bourne Ultimatum. I liked it so much I decided to read the books. I am a sucker for big Hollywood action flicks. I have no idea why but my husband loves it.

19. What’s your favorite Candy? Ferrero Roche . . . drool . . .

20. Tea or Coffee or other? I like both but drink a lot more tea in the fall and winter. I like black tea, not the fruity herbal teas though I do like chamomile.

Vintage Children's Book Swap!

I received my lovely swap yesterday from Maija for the Vintage Children's Book Swap hosted by Jenny at the Polkadot Pixie.



Ah, this might be my worst photo yet, but in my defense, I was really in a hurry to unwrap this cute gift and couldn't be bothered with things like centering or good light. :)

Thrifty?

I ask that as a question because I spent more in the thrift stores this weekend than I would normally. Is that thrifty? Am I thrifty? Am I a collector? I don't know and as you can probably tell I am feeling a bit guilty for my "thrifty" splurge. I am happy with my purchases and for the most part I don't shop much in general. I do know that once I get out of New York City to a place where it is easier to be thrifty my ways will improve.

So what did I get?? As there is a lot I will share it over a few posts so as not to overload your senses. ;) So how about some miscellaneous stuff today?



I love Madeline, isn't she sweet? And only $2 with the tags still on her. She was a bit dusty but I cleaned her up and then put her in the craft room where the dogs couldn't get her. :) The small bird picture is a Fiddlestix print and I'm already quite fond of it. I was also lucky to find a few little books, some doilies and an Irish linen tea towel. The white scarf is a souvenir from New Zealand and is a very luxurious silk.



And as you know, I can't get out of a thrift store with out some sort of dishes . . . . the oyster plate will be nice in my collection (I know have four which is officially more than a "few" and thus is now a collection.) Vintage Pyrex is hard to pass up especially casseroles with lids and that fun snowflake pattern. Both purchased for $3 a piece. The tea cup will become yet another pin cushion and those Noritake snack sets might be my new favorite thing.



And some Christmas things as the thrifts seem to have piles of stuff all of a sudden. The ornaments are Shiny Brites, it says it on the box and on most of the balls, and were a bargain at 99 cents. The melted plastic Santa is not really my thing but I couldn't leave him there as he too was only 99 cents. I figure I'll find him a good home eventually.

Tomorrow I'll share what the chunk of my over spending was at thrift and show off a few collections that seem to have sprung up in my house lately.

Tomorrow is the last day to sign up for the Holiday Sister Swap at Sweet Goodness. We have a few more spaces and I do think this will be a fun one. We have some of our veteran swappers but also some "new to us" swappers who have come on recommendation or have shown to be great potential swap partners through their Etsy and Ebay feedback. This is a great opportunity to make a new crafty friend!

Sweet Nothings

Happy Monday!

How is everyone? I had a rather productive weekend in the thrifting department and I'll be sharing my goodies with you through out the week. I also was relatively crafty. :)

Don't you love small projects? Just little things that come together so easily yet tickle your fancy to no end?



The pisture doesn't do it justice. The basket is about 2 inches wide so this is a small pin cushion. It was in a bag of stuff I picked up at the thrift, I figured to use it for something eventually and voila! Like I said, just a small thing but pretty darn cute. The fabric is from a napkin I picked up at an outlet store in Smithville, New Jersey back in the spring for a dollar. It's patchwork and I've been able to use it for a few projects with different results. I'll be adding this and some tea cup pin cushions to the shop soon.

And remember my crocheted hearts? Well I finally made one that I was able to add the ribbon to:



I'm so happy with it. I actually started yet another one! The pattern is easy and am very drawn to them. It looks nicely with my first attempt:



I like how they are different but go together. I expect you'll see a lot of these from me. If you want to make one yourself here is the pattern for the large one and this is the small one. I changed the edging on that one and added the ribbon according to the directions on the first one. The crocheted part needs to be really tight over your stuffed heart or the ribbon won't stay. The ribbon should also be twice as wide as your chain sections so if you change the chain eight loops in the larger pattern to chain 6 you can use 1 inch ribbon. If anyone is interested in giving it a try send me an email!
